Two Kuhls are Cool
from Norwalk, CT
About Me Quality Oriented
Comments about Friedrich Kuhl 12,000 BTU Window/Wall Slide-Out Air Conditioner:
I have to respond to Disappointed's review. He clearly had a very bad experience. On the other side, I have two Kuhls -- one an 8000 BTU window unit, the other a 15,000 BTU through-the-wall unit -- and both work flawlessly. I also have a 12,000 BTU Friedrich Chill unit in my office. The original unit suffered a broken tubing joint in the cooling system, which was replaced by the dealer under warranty. The replacement unit has worked flawlessly for more years than I can remember. (The Chill and Kuhl units are very different units and, I've been told, are manufactured on different continents.)I thought it was important to let potential buyers know that Disappointed's experience is not the whole story.

I was willing to pay the higher price for a top-quality product, but have been sorely disappointed. After multiple calls to Friedrich Customer Support, an inspection from an authorized Friedrich Repair Shop, and having the unit completely replaced by PC Richards, my Friedrich Kuhl air conditioner continues to malfunction. This is clearly a manufacturing flaw of some sort. When the unit is used in Auto Fan mode it is supposed to cycle the fan on and off (along with the compressor) according to the room temperature. These units cycle off okay, but simply fail to cycle back on again. I've recorded room temperatures as a high as 89 degrees when the unit is set to 72. At first glance, everything seems to function normally. Then, after the room reaches the set temperature, the fan and compressor will cycle off and on a few times, appearing to function as designed before the unit simply shuts down, and stays shut down. The only way to get it working again is to manually power it on. This Auto Fan function is clearly flawed, but nieither Friedrich Customer Service nor the Friedrich Authorized Repair Facilities, not to mention Retailers, seem to be aware of it. After cutting a hole in my house for installation I am stuck with this unit or the extremely costly and inconvenient option of replacing it. I would not recommend purchasing this model.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
