OK when it works
Comments about KitchenAid 36" Downdraft:
First, install isn't clean. You need a LOT Of space to install it easier. It's difficult to get level so the reveals on the countertop look clean. Second, it broke with just a few uses. The fan has a switch that should turn it OFF when the unit goes down. This stopped working on my unit after about 10-15 uses. To Kitchenaids credit though, they fixed for me under warranty. They had to find a local person to do the repair but were actually great to work with on that part!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Product works great. Would buy again. Kitchen aid are reliable products.
Not a toy!

This is the second retractable downdraft we have owned. The one we had previously was purchased in 2011 (not a Kitchenaid). Compared to this new Kitchenaid unit, the old one was a toy. This one is more solidly built and moves more air faster and is quieter than our old one.

When the vent is operating, it is terrific. I was worried about a "downdraft" vent with gas burners so got this one. It extends very high, as high as my tallest stock pot and so vents efficiently without "stealing" heat from the burners. It is not quiet but it is effective. That said, it has been serviced once and replaced once within the first 2 years of ownership. To KA's credit, they covered it even when out of warranty but I cannot rate it higher (and probably should rate it lower) given the reliability issues.

Downdraft is 4 months old and has never been operable. The fan does not automatically turn off when retracted and spontaneously goes up and down. I had to unplug downdraft for safety. The upper trim does not fit properly moving about during operation. The on/off switch is loose and difficult to activate.
only worked for about one month out of three months of ownership
The downdraft came with a broken button. It took a month to get replaced and is now broken again. I've used it about 3 times. I can say from usage that the fan is much better than my previous GE version. I like the way it comes up and retracts. But the use of cheaper plastic on the button make it break more easily. It seems to get stuck in the permanent on position. Seems to be a design flaw.

The first one never worked, button was broken, then motor would not stop. The report company worked on it for 7 visits over 2 months. Finally I replaced it with new unit. The 2nd broke after 10 months. It pops up, sits there a few seconds, makes a loud click and then falls down.

I've only had my downdraft for a couple of months, but so far so good. Really like the variable settings. On low I can hardly hear it. Also, I LOVE the smaller form factor of the under-counter blower (island configuration). It takes up half the space of my old Thermador! Another bonus is that the price includes the blower!

Button that makes the unit raise and lower broke on day one. Button is cheap and made out of plastic. Button was fixed via warranty. The top of the unit does not fit firmly and it is flimsy. Don't buy this product if you are looking for quality.
Very poor performance.

I have had this product for less than a year and already it has been replaced completely under the warranty. The second one still 'sticks' when in elevation mode and doesn't come up all the way - this will probably have to be replaced too. It's noisy when the extractor fans are turned on and it doesn't remove cooking odors, steam, fumes etc. which is the whole point of having it - our venting system is excellent - there are no blockages - so why doesn't the downdraft suck away fumes etc? I would NOT recommend this product to anyone - along with my new Kitchenaid 48" built-in, side-by-side refrigerator - the ice maker has been replaced once already and now the new one has ceased to work - we're waiting for a new 'shoot' - meanwhile - no ice also less than a year old!
