Comments about Microsoft Surface Dock:
I purchased this dock so I could have multiple displays. I have 2 monitors connected to the dock & 1 monitor connected wireless. I not have 3 external monitors & it works great!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great compliment to a Surface Pro 4
I've had this for a couple months now. I've had zero issues with it. I am using this with a Surface Pro 4 Core i7. It is connected to my 65 inch Samsung HD TV in our living room via a display port to HDMI cable. Audio and Video are flawless over this single cable. Also using the LAN port, with no issues. The Surface will connect to Ethernet instead of WiFi by default when docked if using an Ethernet cable. The charger built into the dock is the more potent variety than what comes with the Surface Pro. This one has the power to charge the Surface while the CPU is maxed out and not slowly lose charge.

It could be an excellent dock but it does not work
The dock I had didn't recognize two new La Cie hard drives I have, I was unable to have the recommended resolution on my Dell monitor, the Microsoft ergonomic sculpt keyboard and mouse stop working at some point and I have to unplug the receiver and move it to another USB connection, etc. In addition, the power cable didn't connect all the way inside the power adapter. It could be a wonderful dock if all those issues were resolved. Unfortunately, I returned the dock to the store, and I am still hoping that Microsoft will come up with a better dock soon. I will not recommend the product as long as those issues are not resolved.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

No hdmi ? unbelievable
Docking station is for connectivity, right ? Now HDMI is the mainstream. And we still need to buy a minidisplay to hdmi converter ? Just don't know what those MS engineers were thinking.
ony minor issues
Only have occasional issues on initial connection the dock. The universal fix for my connection issues is to disconnect the dock for 5 seconds and reconnect. I am buying a second for home.
I had reserved my opinion about the Surface Dock despite very mixed reviews online about it. I thought there is a good chance people aren't using it correctly...Perhaps I was wrong. Initially I plugged in all the USB devices I needed, mouse, keyboard, printer, chargers etc. I plugged in the 3.5 audio jack and it all works spot on...but read on... When I attempted to plug the Microsoft Mini DP to VGA into my Surface Dock, my device and PC monitor go nuts, with both screens flashing on and off rendering the monitor or Surface temporarily useless. That's not all, I noticed other devices being intermittent or stopping working all together such as the mouse USB port, the Surface Wi-Fi adapter amongst others. Here's the mental part... When I ignore the Mini DP ports on the Surface Dock and plug it straight into the Surface directly, EVERYTHING WORKS. It defeats the point though of having one quick plug in point to make your device a desktop equivalent and for the money these docks cost I expect fully working quality across the board. I'll admit the magnet on the Surface side attachment is much weaker than the power cable that comes with the Surface. Microsoft, if you're reading this review and you know how the Mini DP to VGA issue can be resolved still allowing me to plug the Mini DP in the Surface Dock please contact me using the email address I submitted with this review.
I got this because I have extended monitors and needed the USB ports. So far it works as I expected.
Monitor (single, not 4K) flickers and USB connection drop outs. All completely random making troubleshooting impossible. Swapped out for new one, new cables, new power cable etc and problem persists, happening to everyone in the office unfortunate enough to have one.
So far so good
Excellent speed connecting storage using USB. I miss a longer cable/extension for hiding away the dock under the conference table.
I use my Surface Pro 4 as a desktop replacement at the office, and have it connected to a 3440x1440 34" Dell 21:9 monitor via Display Ports in the rear. Prior to upgrading my display, it was plugged into 2x 24" 1920x1080 displays - and the dock's been great for easily getting up, unplugging my SP4 and heading home, leaving my headset, USB keyboard, and speakers at my office desk just plugged in and ready for tomorrow. I rated 5-stars because it works great; but it's not 100%, it's closer to 4.75 stars - I typically have to reboot the device to get applications that don't adjust for the PPI displacement Windows 10 invokes when plugging in the Dock. After a reboot, everything's on point; prior to that, I get weird behavior from Chrome and other apps that don't switch back and forth from resolution to resolution with ease; not sure what that's all about - but with reboot times in sub-15 seconds, it's barely even a nuisance.
