very good camera but consider using the kit lens as a paperweight

I have owned the D3300 for about 18 months and its a very good camera. I'm an older person who takes pictures of things that tend to stand still (landscape, nature, abstract). I've spent years using a film SLR and grudgingly moved onto digital a few years ago. I was looking for a simple, not flashy, relatively inexpensive DSLR and I must say that the D3300 certainly fills the bill. In fact, I have recently moved up to the D7200 because I found the D3300 to be too simple...too many changes need to be made via menus rather that knobs or buttons (like on the good old film SLR's). (I considered getting a D5500 but it just didn't feel very good in my hands.) But the actual performance results of the camera are very, very good. The only concern that I experienced was the 18-55 kit lens. The lens always just seemed to deliver softer results than I was used to. But when I moved up to the D7200 I also added the Nikon 35/1.8 DX lens. Much better!!! I 'geeked out' by testing both lenses on both cameras and found the fixed lens to perform better on both cameras. So my suggestion to anyone who is seriously considering the D3300, go ahead and get one. But also add the 35/1.8 DX lens. I don't see how you would be disappointed by this combination. I'll be keeping the D3300 to take on hikes here in the Sierras and using the D7200 for everything else.

happy with it
amazing camera. very happy with it. it takes amazing pictures. easy to learn on, I cannot wait to get new lenses for it. if you are new to photography. this is a solid choice. even if you have already started and are maybe a serious hobbyist this is a good choice.

I have now owned this camera since November 2015. I can't believe how amazing it has been. The image quality and the ease of use is just amazing!(learning curve was small) The automatic mode is good but the manual mode allows for you to control your photos. I enjoy having the ability to shoot NEF(RAW) instead of JPG. I bought it with the 18-55mm kit lens and since then have purchased the 55-200mm lens and just a week ago the 50mm f1.8 prime lens. I have taken over 4000 pictures in that time. Have not been let down by this camera yet. If you are thinking about getting an entry level camera, first I recommend a DSLR and if cost is important, the D3300 is for you. Now, I'm thinking what lens do I want next!

Needed more control then what my wife's P310 was giving me. did a lot of research, and settled on the 3300. Its just amazing what you can do with this camera. Experiment and you will have no trouble achieving the results you are looking for.

Great entry level camera!
I got the D3300 to take pictures of cars which it does perfectly. The picture quality is way higher than I expected and it's cery easy to use. Overall it's a great camera for someone who is fairly new to photography.
