A versatile lens.
from Cincinnati, OH, USA
Comments about Nikon Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR Lens:
The versatility of this lens is remarkable. Even with a minimum focus distance of 4.6 feet, the long focal length allows me to use it for sharp macro photography. The vibration reduction system enables handheld shots even at 300mm in less than bright light. I've used this lens on my D7200 as well as my D3200 with results that were more than satisfactory. This is the lens I leave on my camera when hiking or taking nature images. I highly recommend it.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Excellent lens for beginners
I bought the this lens as a combo package with D5500 camera and so far I'm loving it.
Solid Lens (NIKON has a GREAT warranty)
from Rhode Island, USA
I purchased this lens over two years ago. It is without question a fantastic lens capable of stop action at the full 300mm. I had to send this lens in for service twice: once because the auto-focus seemed to start "hunting" and again when the VR seemed to quit. Both times NIKON USA did a full PM on the lens at no charge to me. I can't believe their 1 + 4 warranty and will always remember that it applies to US MANUFACTURE ONLY!!!
Too Soft and Unsharp
from Haverhill, MA, USA
This lens focuses fast but is very soft from 250 to 300 mm. Better off with the 70-300 Nikon.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I enjoy using this lens. It was easy to learn how to use this lens in coordination with my particular camera. I would like to buy the 200-500mm lens for wildlife and some landscape photography.

I think it worth double the price. Excellent !
For beginners who want to photograph birds or distant subject this is a very cheap ideal lens. It is very light weight and you won't need to carry a tripod ever. It's performance is very beautiful sharp and VR works great (although I have to say if you don't like to autofocus because its slow and some time can't focus). It's versatile zoom range is very good and in 55mm it can be use as a portrait lens and in 200-300mm it can be use like a telephoto. So if you are in budget and want a telephoto for your DX then go for it.
Lens arrived with scratch on coating of lens
from Carterville, IL 62918, USA
The lens came as an outfit with another lens and the D7100 body. I've never had any problems with Nikon/Nikkor lenses before and I've owned quite a few Nikon cameras and still do. I'm very unsatisfied with the fact that no one inspects these lenses before they package them unless of course it isn't human beings packaging the lens in a box. So my first day using it is also the first day of having to package it back up to send it to Nikon for replacement. Be sure to visually inspect every detail of the camera's and lenses you buy Nikon retailers, in this case B and H.

Best for the price
from Minnesota, USA
First I am a professional I use very expensive lenses and bodies. I recommend this lens to all the d3000 to the d7200 users it is good glass low chromatic aberations and you can even use it for portraits. Parents and siblings all have this lens after I referred them to it and the sharpness is amazing for the price. In my opinion no one should buy the 70-300 it is scrap but this lens is great.

from I'm just a guy who loves to take pictures
I have been shooting a lot with this lens, often replacing the sigma 18-250 that I began to use as an all purpose lens. Using my d5200 or d7100, I simply get much sharper photos with excellent characteristics. Quite by surprise, I processed several shots I took of the moon (using a tripod). See for yourself. this lens is awesome on my DX cameras. this is NOT a fast lens, but I still managed to catch a few turkey vultures in flight
