Very nice and inexpensive
from Los Angeles
Comments about Sony ICF-C318 Dream Machine Alarm Clock Radio:
I purchased 4 of them for every bedrooms and my kids and I love them. If you take a couple of minutes and read the one small page manule it is very simple to set the alarm clock.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I purchased this miniature alarm clock because my previous Sony alarm clock began to malfunction after seven years of continuous use. I expect this model to last just as long. I especially appreciate the dual alarm feature, and the knobs for adjusting the alarm time, placed upon either side of the device, are quite efficient and functional. The improved alarm sound is both pleasant and effective. Other than the power cord, there are also no annoying cords or antennae with this model. I did not purchase this device to use as a radio. I personally choose to set the device to emit news broadcasts upon a local talk radio station when I wake, and I believe the speaker functions rather well. The device is sturdy, compact, inexpensive, highly functional, and just what I expect from Sony.

About Me Casual User
Needed a very simple alarm clock, just something to wake me up in the morning. Considering the price I paid, I am happy with it. Good volume to wake me out of a deep sleep (and I've slept through thunderstorms), simple controls once you get used to them, and you can toggle the brightness of the display. Is it perfect? No. The radio settings are choppy: the music rarely comes through clearly, and reading the manual is a must to figure out how to set the time, date, and everything else. But I don't use it as a radio, so it didn't get too many points deducted.

Mediocre at Best
Get this clock radio and every six months you'll be either online or looking for your instructions for how to set your clock one hour forward or one hour back. It is not intuitively obvious and a real pain to figure it out each time. This is without question the most complicated clock radio I've ever had for setting the time.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

poor reception, poor clock
from Vallejo, California
This is a good paper weight. Since the sound quality is so bad and the time cannot be set accurately, it is a waste as a clock-radio.
Not A Good Buy
I simply did not think that this Dream Machine was worth the amount of money charged; for two basic reasons. The machine did not feel like quality material, and there were far too many cords issuing forth from the device. Sony needs to redesign this device with higher quality plastics, and design the auxiliary cord, and antenna cord, as detachable. I hope this feedback improves future models. Being mindful of sounding too negative, or counterproductive, but over the past 24 months I have seen a profound reduction in the quality of Sony products, while prices continue to increase.

Doesn't keep accurate time
My wife has had this clock for about 10 months now, and it hasn't kept accurate time since day one. Supposedly you just plug it in and the time is automatically set for you. Well, I don't know what clock it's getting it's information from, but when I first plugged it in, the time was set at about 5 minutes ahead. Now it's 9 minutes ahead. I have a GE dual alarm clock that I've been using since 1990 and it's always kept accurate time. How hard can that be, SONY?

Mediocre at best
from Morristown, Tennessee
Too much to do to set it up and for some reason that I can not figure out and have read operating instructions completely, about a minute before my radio comes on that I set to come on a beeping starts and lasts about 20 beeps. Don't know why and I don't like it. May be returning this radio to the store.
Good but not great
from Central NJ
For a Sony product I expected better quality. The unit is very light weight and flimsy feeling. The sound quality is what you would expect from a small made-in-China radio. You can play an iPod or iPhone through it, go to sleep and/or wake up to music, but it's not for extended listening. The description says it has dual alarm. As far as I can tell, you can only set one alarm time and then choose to wake up to music, the radio or a buzzer. The buzzer is not very loud. The radio works well but there are no tuning buttons. You have to set the presets by scanning the available stations and then you can step through the presets. It works but seems a little awkward. The radio is FM only - not a concern for me but others may be disappointed. The radio comes with dock adapters for iPods and iPhones. My iPhone won't fit in the adapter with the case on, so I just use it without the adapter, which works OK. The display is very bright but you can easily set it to two lower intensities by pressing the snooze bar, which is nice. I bought this primarily to charge my iPhone overnight and it works well for that. I initially though I might also use the alarm and listen to music, but I will continue to use my other clock radio for that.

Almost perfect but because of the one con, I would not recommend. The backlight on it is way too bright even on the dimmest setting. The backlight can be turned off entirely (clock still functions) but it's nice to see the time at night. So dissapointed!!!
