Fantastic sound in stereo or surround

Comments about Yamaha Dolby Digital 7.2 Receiver:
Having come from 2 Sony receivers, the improvement in sound quality, sound stage, noise floor and detail (with the same set of speakers and external power amplifier) is incredibly impressive. I do not use the internal amplifier (Emotiva XPA-3) to drive VAF Research DC-X35 fronts and VAF Research DC-6 centre speakers - plus a VAF Research Platform subwoofer (internal amplifier). Setup was simple and effective. In a small New York apartment (lounge room approx 18ft x 11 ft, timber floors, brick and drywall walls, 10ft ceilings) - there should be no right to have the width and depth of sound. But the Yamaha does a truly astonishing job. I am not terminology expert, but I know when I hear quality sound and this product delivers in spades.I did not go for the new 40 series as I don't need WiFi in the receiver and I doubt I'd pick the difference in DAC's. I also didn't stump for the 2030 or 3030 as I doubt I'll use more than 5.1 or zone 2 (currently using 3.1 and main zone only). At a pinch, maybe there could be a more weighty remote (aluminium front panel instead of plastic) or better options to disable the internal amplifier, or better bass management at night - but I'm really being picky. Grab one now if you can now that the 1040 is out, it's a fantastic product.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great value for price
By Desert Runner
About Me Audiophile, Movie Enthusiast, Practical
Use mostly for home theater. This replaced my old Yamaha Rx-V3300 which was a higher end system. The old Yamaha had better controls and sound but lacked HDMI which is a must in todays AV market. I kept the V3300 hooked up for when I wanted better audio control for music only. Noticeable difference but I doubt anyone other than a total audiophile would pick it up. Overall the Rx-A1030 is great value for the cost.
Awesome Amp At Fair Price

Most awesome receiver I have owned. Owned Yamaha before, but this one smoked the last one. The fidelity of running my Stanton Turntable is amazing. The home theatre decoder is brilliant. I LOVE being able to turn it on and control it with my Galaxy S3. Couldn't be happier. Nothing like sitting outside in the back yard and listen to Sirius through my BOSE outdoor speakers and be able to turn the system on/off and adjust volume through my phone. The whole system is well thought out.
Awesome HT Receiver

This is the latest addition when upgrading my HT system. I've had 3 Yamaha receivers dating back 20 years and all still work and sound great. I only watch movies or sports events in my dedicated HT, but I have to say this receiver made a difference - even when upgrading from my 4-year old Yamaha. Great line!

First time Yamaha owner. Previous receiver was less than 2 years old. 5.1 set up with Zone 2. Uses include watching TV, Blu-rays, music CDs, and steaming movies and music . The only disappointment is Spotify Connect. In order to listen to Spotify (Premium subscription) via Zone 2 (patio speakers), the Zone 2 input needs to be set to AirPlay. AirPlay is available in Zone2 only when AirPlay playback is ongoing in the main zone. Not only do I have to tie up my phone or tablet to listen to Spotify, if I access it in Zone 2 no one can use the Main Zone for anything different.Other than the Spotify Connect/AirPlay issue the RX-A1030 is considerably higher quality than my previous receiver. The sound quality is the biggest reason followed by its overall craftsmanship. Its setup and controls are user friendly and its aesthetic design were also contributing factors. The app is a nice added bonus.
Upgrade From Previous Receiver
About Me Tech Savvy
First time Yamaha owner. Upgrading from a receiver less than 2 years old. 5.1 set up with Zone 2. Uses are the usual watching TV, Blu-rays, music CDs, and steaming movies and music . The only negative that I have is I utterly dislike Spotify Connect. In order to listen to Spotify (Premium subscription) via Zone 2 (patio speakers), the Zone 2 input needs to be set to Air Play. In order for that to happen the Main Zone input is automatically set to Air Play. Not only do I have to tie up my phone or tablet to listen to Spotify, if I access it in Zone 2 no one can use the Main Zone for anything different. The remote does feel cheaply made and the print is kind of small but since I use a Harmony remote it's hard to hold that against it.Other than the Spotify Connect/Air Play issue the RX-A1030 is considerably of higher quality than my previous receiver. The sound is the biggest reason (still fine tuning) followed by its craftsmanship. Its setup and controls are user friendly and its aesthetic design were also contributing factors. The app is a nice added bonus.
Manual needs improvement
from Concord, NH
About Me Audiophile, Tech Savvy
I had to purchase a Grundig Eton NGAN200 Antenna to get half decent AM reception as the supplied AM antenna barely picked up any stations. Before purchasing the NGAN200 I tried the antenna from my old Technics receiver which did work better than the one supplied by Yamaha. Also directions in the manual are confusing and lack completeness. On the positive side the unit is very faxable and can accommodate a large variety of devices including legacy produces. Its capability to convert a variety of video inputs to digital is very impressive and covenant.Speaker setup is also fairly straight forward and impressive.
Awesome Unit, Many Inputs/Outputs Sound
from St. Louis, MO
About Me Gaming, Movie Enthusiast
This is an Awesome sound system. It has a lot of choices of inputs and outputs. Has really good sound quality. Had the Onkyo 7.2 and after two sound boards going out on two different units had to change. I really like this unit and hopes it lasts a lifetime. I hope to get one more for my Xbox 360. Glad I tried this!!!

Upgraded from RXA800

About Me Movie Enthusiast, Practical, Tech Savvy
I bought the display model for $800 and got the free WIFI adapter. Also, the salemen couldn't find the remote so they gave me a RX-A2030 and it rocks! These units now days are so robust with options that unless you dedicate a day or two its hard to get the setup done. Plus, my man cave isn't big enough to get the full use of this unit. For me, great deal and works awesome. Don't notice a huge differance from my RX-A800 yet, but I haven't had the chance to "really" dial it in and play with the additional options (WIFI, Airplay etc...)As far as the remote goes the upgraded RX-A2030 remote is sweet and so far no compatibility issues.
