Comments about Panasonic DMREZ48VK DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
Good quality. The complaint by another reviewer regarding playback of tapes is easily corrected. Change the screen aspect ratio of your hi-def TV to 4:3. It plays fine at that aspect ratio; as good as any VHS playback. It will not be as sharp as 1080 but that is the limitation of the media [VHS tape]. Drawback: It is slow to boot unless you change the power setting [then it eats power]. Also, the remote is a bit complex and takes some getting used too.
All in all afine product with a few drawbacks; but what consumer product does not have some negatives?

Comments about Panasonic DMREZ48VK DVD Recorder/VCR Combo:
Just wanted a DVD player that would record VHS and make DVDs from existing VHS tapes. This unit will do all of that and more. However, I returned it because the VHS playback quality is poor when viewed on a 1080p screen. The VHS to TV interface is with RCA AV connectors, not even the higher-res component format. Normal analog TV resolution becomes unwatchable at 37". The DVD playback over component or HDMI is beautiful, but the user's manual is very poorly done. Setup and connections, especially with a settop cable box, get only minimal treatment. Information about the most basic functions is arbitrarily split up and scattered in different places throughout the manual.
