Amazing venting! Installation: Depends
Our 48" (D49M48SB) vent 'flat-out' works better than expected. It does not affect the burner flames. Starting the vent a minute or so before turning the stove on helps create currents that lead into the vent and effectively contains migrating odors, smoke, and stove exhaust. Adjacent rooms know not what cooks in the kitchen. That's the great news. The not so good news is that the vent was probably not made for our application. It is engineered more for island applications. Our 48" stove is against an exterior kitchen wall. I wanted the vent to sit behind the stove and connect to an external blower (attached to the outside of the external facing wall). We were willing to push the stove out 2.5" - 3" from the wall to accommodate the downdraft. But, the manufacturer does not accommodate this type of installation. It provides a transition duct that effectively pushes the stove out 7" from the wall. We did not want an overhead vent, because it takes up space and we wanted a more streamline look to our kitchen. We ended up having a sheet metal shop make a transition piece that fit inside our wall that eventually pushed the stove out 3" from the wall. It was a real headache trying to get the vent at the right height, which had to be determined when modifying the walls, not when the stove arrived for installation (installers will tell you not to trust the stove manufacturer's specifications, which, in our case, proved true when we found that the backsplash was 1 inch shorter than specified). So, the installation was the worst part of the kitchen remodel. But, now, that the pain is memory, the downdraft is a dream. For those of you wanting a downdraft for your island stove, this product is an elegant workhorse. Even when it is not turned on, its light cast a stately glow to your stove area. Enjoy!

Best 48" bad boy down draft
I've had downdrafts in the past NONE of which compares to this Bad Boy BEAST! I LOVE the 2 level lighting which TOTALLY Illuminates my 48" rangetop, having three speeds is always nice & this beast is a WORK HORSE, sucking every ounce of everything right down the "chute". My downdraft vents shooting towards my next door neighbor who is actually ENJOYING all of the aroma's it's sending his way, when it's running! All in all on a scale of 1-10: it scores a 15!
