Get Ready for the Nintendo Switch 2!
Posted on May 19, 2025 By Mike M.
The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 is on its way! As the anticipated follow-up generation to the original Nintendo Switch, this hybrid video game console is setting the gaming world on fire. Read on to find out everything you need to know about the Nintendo Switch 2 including many of its new features, and why the hype for this console is through the roof.
What is the Nintendo Switch?
To understand why gamers are so excited for the Switch 2, we first need to discuss why the original Switch was such a groundbreaking console. The Nintendo Switch was the first console of its kind, as it was able to be used as both a handheld console and a traditional video game console that hooks up to a TV. The real kicker was just how easy it was to swap between these two modes - if you wanted to go from handheld mode to console mode, all it took was sliding it into a dock. To convert it back, you'd just simply take it out of the dock. The controllers, known as Joy-Cons, were also highly innovative. They could slide on and off of the Switch with ease, allowing them to be used remotely when in console or handheld mode, or as connected controllers when in handheld mode. Though the Switch was an absolute hit on release and for many years after, the specs inside of the impressive console quickly became outdated. Newer-generation consoles could run games at better quality, and other handheld gaming options became more viable than the famous Nintendo video game console over the years. That's why when eager fans finally caught a look at the new iteration of the console, the hype rose to a fever pitch and has yet to calm down.
Will the Switch 2 be 4K?
Now that we've discussed the brief history of the Switch, we can finally get into some of the new specs on the Switch 2. First off, when in console mode, and hooked up to a 4K TV, the Switch 2 will be able to run games in 4K. That is a huge step up from the previous generation, and puts the Nintendo Switch 2 specs more in line with the latest Sony video game consoles and Microsoft video game consoles. Alongside the 4K visuals, the Switch 2 also boasts 120 FPS gaming and HDR which, when combined with 4K, will make all of the visuals on your Switch 2 look amazingly smooth. Though the console can produce some impressive visuals in console mode, in handheld mode you'll still get the high frame rates and HDR, but at a 1080p resolution.
New and Improved Joy-Con 2 Controllers
We touched briefly on the amazing Joy-Con controllers that made their debut alongside the original Switch earlier. These gaming controllers are versatile, as they can be attached or detached from the Switch at will and can be used in a number of different ways to play a variety of games. The Switch 2 comes with the Joy-Con 2 controllers, which further innovate on the original design. Where the old Joy-Cons would slide onto the sides of the Switch console and lock onto it, the new controllers are magnetic and can snap on and off of the Switch 2 even more easily, making the transition between forms even faster. They can also even be used like a computer mouse when playing certain games. They also still maintain that same comfy hand feel as the original Joy-Cons that are great to use both at home and on the go. Finally, you'll also find the new “C” button on the Joy-Con 2 controllers, but we'll get more into what that button can do later.

A New Stand
The original Switch had a convenient stand that could pop in and out of the console whenever you needed it to shift from handheld mode to tabletop mode. This stand gave you the ability to play your switch at different angles without hooking it up to a TV. On the Nintendo Switch 2, you'll have access to a new and improved stand on the back of it that lets you adjust your viewing angle with up to 150 degrees of movement. This'll make playing your switch on a tabletop even better as you can adjust at will to avoid glare or uncomfortable angles.
Talk to Your Friends as You Play
Voice chat has been a staple in the gaming community since the glory days of Xbox Live and PSN, though Nintendo has always been the odd man out when it came to this feature. The Nintendo Switch 2 will finally change that. The aforementioned “C” on the new Joy-Con 2 controllers will allow you to start chatting with friends through GameChat. That means you'll have better communication on competitive games with your friends, or just a chill space to chat as you all do your own thing. Of course, you'll need various accessories to use GameChat like a gaming headset, or a pair of headphones. GameChat also offers video chatting, so you'll need a webcam if you want to use the feature to its fullest.
Nintendo Switch 2 Games from Classic Franchises
Of course, all of these new features would mean nothing if you didn't have any good video games to play on the Switch 2. Thankfully, Nintendo video games feature some of the most popular game franchises on the planet. Shortly after the release of the console, you can expect new titles from the Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Kirby, and Metroid franchises. The Switch 2 can use both physical and digital copies of Nintendo Switch 2 console games, so they're very accessible, and you can even play some older games on the new console.
What is the Nintendo Switch 2 Release Date?
