Cabinet Color and Appliance Color Matches

Working on a perfect kitchen color scheme? Here are some kitchen color-matching tips from guest blogger Camila Pavone of Effortless Style Interiors!

Gone are the days of avocado green and harvest gold kitchen appliances, but that doesn't mean you can't be creative when it comes to your appliance color choice. As an interior designer, clients come to me for functional and beautiful kitchens where the color of the appliances is a very thought-out decision. Depending on your kitchen cabinet style, cabinet color and overall kitchen design style, the best appliance color will vary. Here's a look at some winning color combos!

Stainless Steel Kitchen Appliances

The appliance color that has had the longest run is stainless steel. People love stainless steel because it's so versatile. It works with any wood tone, cabinet color, and design style. It's not too cool or warm in color which makes it a great neutral. Best part? The look of stainless steel really gives off a clean and professional vibe. It really helps your kitchen look like a professional chef's kitchen and you don't have to necessarily break the bank. It can easily work in a traditional design style kitchen from a country style kitchen to a professional industrial-style kitchen.

I believe that stainless steel will always be a timeless and safe color option for kitchen appliances, but if you are looking into adding more of a designed and signature touch to your kitchen, I implore you to look at other options that are available. While an all-white kitchen is beautiful and timeless, since we are spending more and more time in the kitchen simply gathering and not just cooking, homeowners are looking into adding more personality into the space. Nowadays colored cabinets are used more and more frequently. People are either going all out with colored cabinets on top and bottoms or using an accent color like navy or green on the bottom cabinets or kitchen island. Do stainless steel appliances work with colored cabinets? Yes, they totally do, but another great option is white.

White Kitchen Appliances

Back in the day, white was the basic model and use to be considered very old-fashioned, but white appliances have gotten quite a transformation and I'm constantly sourcing them for design projects. The key to using all white appliances is making sure the finish is matte and making sure the hardware on the appliances has a metal finish to them like stainless steel or brass. It is a sophisticated and timeless choice that will make visitors to your home compliment you and second-guess going with the standard stainless steel options.

I find white appliances to work really nicely with new traditional design styles, modern transitional style, and farmhouse style. It's a great neutral that is giving stainless steel appliances a run for their money.

Black Kitchen Appliances

Black appliances have also gotten a major transformation, and I have found them to be popping up more and more in many modern homes. Warm wood tone cabinets are also back in fashion and they pair so nicely with a black appliance. They also work beautifully with deep dark-painted cabinets. I find them to not be for the faint of heart. If you use black appliances you are making a statement, and it's one that is glam and chic or modern and minimalist depending on your cabinet style!

Regardless of appliance colors, here are some tips for when it comes to selecting what works best for you:

  • Don't stress about the appliance brands matching. If you are dreaming of a certain brand for a dishwasher and a different one for your range, it's okay to go with different brands.
  • Use the same color throughout the appliances.
  • If you are using stainless steel appliances, don't be afraid to add a different metal like brass to your faucet and cabinet hardware.
  • Don't forget to measure twice when it comes to appliance placement in your kitchen. Refrigerators now come in a variety of heights, widths, and depths! Also, if you are in an older home, the walls can be wonky and you need to be careful that the standard stove size you want actually fits properly.
  • Countertop color selection is another crucial piece of the puzzle. Anything in the white family whether it be synthetic or natural stone tends to go nicely with all appliance colors.

Other things to remember are the life span of your appliances:

  • Refrigerators: 9-14 years
  • Ovens/Ranges: 13-15 years for electric, 15-17 years for gas
  • Dishwashers: 7-10 years
