How to Sleep Comfortably While Pregnant

Your first pregnancy is such a special milestone in your life, but it comes with plenty of challenges, and sleeping comfortably can be a big one! Getting plenty of rest is important for both you and your baby, and your sleeping posture during pregnancy is a major factor in the quality of that rest. Here are some tips on sleeping positions that will help you get comfy and stay comfy all night throughout your pregnancy!
Elevating Your Upper Body
When you’re pregnant, you may have trouble breathing while lying down. Using some extra pillows, or even a mattress wedge, to prop up your upper body can help reduce the amount of pressure on your diaphragm. This approach can also help to relieve heartburn, another common side effect of pregnancy.
Supporting Your Lower Lumbar
The added weight of pregnancy can cause back pain. A lumbar support pillow can help provide additional support to your body by reducing strain on your back, and should make it easier to sleep. There are special pregnancy pillows available that are specially designed to provide low back lumbar support, making this sleeping position easier and more comfortable.
Propping Up Your Bed
If you find yourself suffering from a lot of heartburn and propping yourself up with pillows isn’t working for you, consider having your bed propped up near the head so that it slants downward. Heavy duty bed risers are an inexpensive and safe way to prop up your bed; placing two under each of the feet at the head of your bed should do the trick. This will help keep your stomach acids down, preventing them from going up into your esophagus. Enjoying how you feel when propped up in bed? Now may be a good time to look into an adjustable bed frame!
Whatever sleeping position you choose, avoid sleeping on your stomach or flat on your back, as both can result in breathing issues and stomach problems. Having a high-quality mattress will help ensure a good night's rest as well. Sleep well, and congratulations on your soon-to-be new addition!
