Our Rich History

We've got an incredible history! Our company persevered through World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II, and we've been family-owned and operated for five generations. The tradition of Honesty, Integrity, and Reliability was started by Pieter Christian Richard (1st generation), upheld by A.J. Richard (2nd generation), Gary Richard (3rd generation), Gregg Richard and Peter C. Richard III (4th generation), and Scott Richard (5th generation).

A.J. Richard, our founder, said, "Keep sunshine in your heart." He knew the key to happiness in life is all about doing what you enjoy. His passion for customer service and love for our company has been contagious. He's shown us that putting our customers first and keeping sunshine in our hearts leads to work well done with endless possibilities. He's taught us everything we need to know about our core values of Honesty, Integrity, and Reliability. This passion for what we do has lead to multiple generations of customers returning, and our rich history inspires us to excitedly look to all that our future holds. Working for a company with such rich history is not only rewarding, but truly inspiring.

Finding Inspiration from Our Founder, A.J. Richard

With sound judgment for business and love for the company, A.J. lead the charge in developing our company into what it is today. We continue to implement his key values that have become such an important part of our past, present, and future. He helped to foster a strong reputation for reliability throughout the years. As he often put it, "Richard IS Reliable," words in which we still live by today. "I have protected and worked for these words all my life. You cannot just say you are reliable. You must earn that reputation each and every minute of the day, day in and day out," he once described.

We've found inspiration in A.J.'s words of wisdom throughout the years, and we've been shown the importance of work well done. "There are two joys of youth. There's the joy of playing--baseball, street games, the beach with friends. The other joy, which to me is one of the greatest joys of life, is the feeling of accomplishment that comes with work well done. It's a pleasure that can be far greater than playing," A.J. once said. These words continue to motivate us throughout the years as we strive to reach more milestones and accomplishments in our future. His values are forever engraved in our company's culture, and his legacy lives on. It's great to work for a company that cherishes its history and looks to its founder for inspiration.

We're Continuously Expanding

Gregg, Gary's son, was named president of our company in 2004 and CEO in 2012. He carried his family's legacy on be developing the service center in Farmingdale, adding mattresses and growing the business while keeping to our tradition of Honesty, Integrity, and Reliability. Peter C. Richard III was appointed vice president of the company. He currently oversees the operations of our warehouses while educating, training, and inspiring his team.

Today, we have 66 showrooms located in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, three distribution centers, two service centers, and four A.J. Richard Learning Centers. Between deliveries, installations, and appliance services, we're knocking on 5,000 customers' doors each day! And we're always happy to go above and beyond to provide excellent customer service.
