When is the "Right Time" to Upgrade?

Everyone is at least a little resistant to change, even when something isn't working anymore. You can see this idea in action when it comes to upgrading your belongings that have long surpassed their expiration date. It's hard to make the conscious choice to replace your possessions, but if you frequently find yourself making excuses - or having to perform some kind of ritual to get your items to work - it may finally be the “right time” to upgrade. Let's hit on three major household items that people often slack on upgrading for one reason or another, as well as some signs that it's time for them to go.

Mattress

You may put off replacing your mattress because of the cost, or possibly the physical logistics of the replacement process. What's more, your new mattress is likely to be with you for a long time, so you have to be absolutely sure that you like it. It's no wonder that these factors lead many people to putting off replacing their mattress for as long as they can. Some signs that your mattress may be reaching its end include:

  • Visible wear and tear
  • Loud noises when you're getting on or off of it
  • Sagging or indents

If your mattress suffers from some or all of these symptoms, you may have reached the “right time” to replace it. To help simplify the process, check out our mattress buying guide. It's important to bear in mind is that replacing your old mattress can be amazing for your sleep quality, which affects your overall well-being. Your wellness is worth the investment!

Laptop

Having to work on an old, slow laptop is challenging to say the least, and yet many are reluctant to replace their computer when it starts to show signs of aging. This can be due to a bunch of reasons, but it's likely because once you make the decision to upgrade to a new model, you've got to transfer a lot of data from the old laptop to the new laptop. Setting up a new computer takes time, and though it can be exciting to get a new piece of tech, it can be scary to replace something that is probably so customized to your specific tastes. There will come a point where you can't handle watching that loading wheel spin for a full minute just to open a new program, and that's only one sign of an aging machine. Other signs that your laptop is ready to be replaced include:

  • Frequent overheating
  • Frequent freezing
  • Noisy fans
  • Battery being unable to hold a charge

These are all common issues associated with old laptops. If you see a combination of any of these happening with yours, then you have likely reached the “right time” to upgrade.

Water Heater

A water heater is another major item that people tend to put off replacing, or at least repairing until it becomes a major nuisance. This is likely because the process to replace one might involve multiple days of work and strange people in your home to take care of it. However, it is very important that you get your water heater at least serviced once a year to make sure it's running right. If you don't, you may run into issues down the line. Outside of that yearly maintenance, signs that your water heater may be ready for an upgrade - or an early call to your technician - include:

  • Loud noises like pops or bangs
  • Puddles or moisture around the unit
  • Discolored water from your faucets
  • Temperature fluctuations
  • Less available hot water
  • Higher energy bills
  • Less hot water pressure

All of these signs may indicate that your water heater is not running at full capacity. If you experience several of these occurrences, or you've tried already to get it fixed to no avail, then it may be the “right time” to upgrade your water heater.

Ultimately, the only one who knows when it's the “right time” to upgrade something is you. It may take some time to shake off the denial, but once you take a step back and realize that something has run its course, you can start the process of replacing it. If your belongings are starting to show any of the signs above, or any other signs of wear, don't fret: It may just be the “right time” to upgrade.
