How Sleepwalking Prevents Good Sleep

In fact, people who have a sleepwalking disorder, known as somnambulism, can put themselves and others in danger due to their ability to walk or even perform complex behaviors while still asleep. While in some cases sleepwalking can be as harmless as sitting up in bed, it can also result in someone getting into their car and driving, which isn’t something you want to do while asleep!

How Does Sleepwalking Happen?

Sleepwalking usually occurs when a person transitions from a deep-sleep stage to a lighter sleep stage. Although more common while a person is still in a deep-sleep stage, it's not uncommon for sleepwalking to occur during the lighter sleep state, which is usually within a couple of hours after falling asleep.

There’s no specific cause for sleepwalking, but there are a few factors that contribute to the disorder. These factors include stress, an erratic sleep schedule, and the influence of medication and alcohol. Certain medical conditions are linked to sleepwalking as well, including heartburn, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and PTSD.

Some of the dangers of sleepwalking are obvious, especially if the person who is affected is performing potentially dangerous tasks like going for a drive or turning on the stove. However, sleepwalking also affects the quality of a person's sleep. Sleepwalking can result in inattentiveness, sleepiness, or even hyperactivity the next day.

Trying to wake a sleepwalker can be harder than you think. Because they’re often in a deep-sleep stage, they may not remember the episode even if you do wake them. Generally speaking, the best way to deal with someone who is sleepwalking is to simply guide them back to their bed without waking them up.

How to Prevent Sleepwalking

There are a few ways that you can prevent sleepwalking from happening. Make sure that you get at least seven to nine hours of sleep and that you establish a fixed sleeping routine. You should also get a high-quality mattress that will help to relax you as you lay down to bed and provides a comfortable night's sleep.
