Modern Sound for a Classic Car
Spring is in the air, and lots of people are starting to take out their classic cars for some time in the spotlight! One of our customers recently restored his 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo into immaculate condition. The only thing missing was a modernized car stereo, so he came to P.C. Richard & Son. He went to our Lawrenceville Installation Center and spoke with Ernie, our mobile installer, to see what upgrades could be done.
An inspection of the vehicle revealed the car only had a cassette player, and the speakers were crackling and sounded muffled. The customer wanted modern features and satellite radio capabilities without any modifications to the dashboard, which would devalue the classic vehicle.
Ernie suggested the Alpine CDE-HD148BT car stereo for its sleek appearance and high-end features. It’s equipped with an AM/FM plus HD Radio, a CD player, USB input, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and music streaming. It’s satellite ready, so a SiriusXM tuner was added to receive satellite stations. He also found Kenwood speakers that were drop-in replacements for the factory speakers and wouldn’t involve any modifications to make them fit.
The installation began by removing the top dash grills to install the new 3 ½” Kenwood KFC835C coaxial speakers. Listening earlier indicated the speakers were in poor condition, but after they were removed, revealed severe deterioration.
Moving to the trunk, the rear supports were detached, dropping down the rear deck speakers. These were much larger 4” x 10” speakers and in similar shape as the front.
When deck and dash mounted speakers aren’t made from the proper material and are exposed to direct sunlight, they disintegrate after a few years. Kenwood KFC415Cs speakers were installed in their place, which are built for many years of performance with impressive sound.
Next, the cassette deck was removed to make room for the Alpine radio and SXV300 SiriusXM tuner. The Alpine was wired up, the satellite tuner was mounted behind it, and slid into the factory location for a clean, seamless look.
Once the install was completed, it was time to show off the results. The new radio provides convenience and a powerful built-in amplifier to really push the Kenwood speakers.
The addition of HD Radio offers new stations on the FM dial that play diverse programming in crystal-clear digital sound. The SirusXM tuner supplies hundreds of stations with music genre-specific channels and talk radio programs. Hands-free calling adds smart phone connectivity and allows streaming of popular music apps such as Pandora and Spotify.
